Iolite Hosting

Architected for Flexiblity and Control

Our Iolite Hosting Platform is uniquely flexible, designed to give you maximum control. Iolite can run on a variety of hardware, from a single mini PC to cluster of servers. Each Iolite instance can host multiple organizations. An organization is a family, community, or business that has a distinct set of domain names, users, and apps.

We run Iolite on a server cluster in a datacenter in Chattanooga, TN, that we use for running our business on and also allow anyone else to sign up for and use as well. However, we also provide the exact same software to anyone who wants to run their own server(s). For example, you could set up Iolite on your server and have one organization for your family, another for your small business, and another for your parents. You could even use our platform to start your own hosting business, charging others to use your server resources just like we do for our hosted offering.

While it's great to have the choice of using our servers, your own servers, or servers run by somebody else you trust, the true flexibility comes from the ability to move your organization between servers using our simple migration tools. This means you can start on our servers to try it out (as most probably will), then buy your own server and move all your users, apps, and data to that for more privacy and long-term cost savings. Of course, you can move the other direction as well, if you are going to be moving around you can transfer back to our servers for a season.

Choosing Where to Host

Even though we can make more money from organizations hosted on our servers, our ideal is for everyone to run their own servers in the long run. When you run your software on someone else's server, you have to blindly trust them and hope that they are abiding by their privacy policy. When you run your own server, you have ultimate control and can never be cancelled. We also believe that de-centralization is the antedote to the problems being caused by Big Tech's centralization of technology power.

We encourage our customers to start on our servers so that you can evaluate the software with minimal investment. Once you are comfortably on our servers and are happy with the apps and the direction you are going, we then encourage you to consider moving to your own server. However, we understand that staying on our servers makes sense if you...

  • Don't have a physical facility with decent internet and reliable power where you could run a server
  • Don't have the capitol to buy the hardware needed (though we may be able to help with financing)
  • Don't want to take on the additional responsiblities of running a server (even though we make it as simple as possible)
  • Are a quickly growing business that doesn't want to hassle with upgrading your hardware every year to keep up with headcount and expanding technology needs

If you do run your own server, you'll be able to...

  • Access your apps and data over the local network, even if you lose access to the internet
  • Save money by purchasing app licenses up-front and only using the services you need
  • Freely run custom and third-party apps
  • Cheaply add more storage via USB or thunderbolt hard drive bays or network attacked storage (NAS) devices
  • Transfer files to and from your server using a USB drive
  • Inspect the internet traffic of each of your apps to make sure no data is being leaked

Ultimately, we want to work with you to find the best option for your organization, balancing ideals with practicality.
